About Us

Jerry Chen

Co-Founder

 

Before inventing and founding Firewalla, Jerry spent nearly 20 years at Cisco Systems, where he was a senior manager and oversaw numerous projects across the Security Technology Group, the Core Routing Group, and the Consumer Business Unit. He was also a member of the Cisco InfoSec Team, focusing on data protection.

Jerry is still an full-stack developer and architect, and his current passion is looking at the impact of AI on IoT devices, and making cyber security less complex.

Jerry still design cloud services, review all product designs and code review major features. A big fan of node.js and learning vibe code.

Jerry graduated from University of California at Santa Barbara with MS and BS in Electrical Engineering.  

Melvin Tu

Co-Founder

 

Melvin is a 10-year veteran of Cisco Systems’ Security Technology Group. There, he spent much of his time creating one of the world’s leading analytics engines for cybersecurity monitoring Cisco's digital assets and dealing with insider threats. He is a fan of mobile app development, gaming, and hiking. Melvin is responsible for Engineering.

Melvin started college when he was 14 years old. He graduated from Southeast University with MS and BS in Computer Networking.  

 

Annie Lu

Co-Founder

 

Annie worked at Cisco Systems as a senior manager for 15 years, splitting her time between Security Technology Group and Optical Networking Group. She is also a founder of a toy company and an amateur photographer. She is passionate about making customers happy. Annie is responsible for operations, and also a developer at random times.

Annie is a graduate of Texas Tech University with a BS degree in Computer Science.

We are a group of engineers (and mostly ex-Cisco) working to address the cybersecurity challenges faced by businesses and homes. Our software is open source  (https://github.com/firewalla) and powered by our passion to secure the world. Yes, we are a small team, but our vision is BIG!

Interestingly, part of Firewalla’s code was developed and designed at the same Denny’s location — 2484 Berryessa Road — where NVIDIA was first founded. This was back before the Firewalla founders could afford a table or an office, and young enough not to worry about milkshakes, burgers and fries.

Firewalla is enterprise security made simpler, built for professional users who want deeper visibility, policy control, segmentation, VPN, threat protection, zero trust network architecture, and ongoing network management beyond a typical small business or consumer router.

Making cybersecurity simple, affordable, and powerful for professionals and businesses.   

Our Funding Journey

Firewalla was funded through Kickstarter in 2017 and later via Indiegogo in 2018 and 2019. 

Our crowdfunding experience and our awesome early adopters helped us to focus and refine our product. We’d like to thank every one of our early Firewalla users.
